The 63rd annual conference of Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists (APCON) was held at Armed Forces Medical College, Pune from 5th to 7th December, 2014. JIPMER had a strong presence in the conference with 10 delegates from the Department of Pathology under the guidance of Dr. Pampa Ch Toi, Associate Professor of Pathology, Dr. Sajini Elizabeth Jacob, Associate Professor of Pathology and Dr. Adarsh Barwad, Assistant Professor of Pathology. Four oral papers and 5 posters on diverse aspects of pathology were presented. Abstracts of all the papers were published in the November (Supplement) issue of Indian Journal of Pathology and Microbiology.

Best Original Article Award for JIPMER Faculty
Dr.BH.Srinivas, Asst.Professor, Dept.of.Pathology selected for “Dr. D N Das Best Paper Award: 2013” for best original article published in Indian Journal of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (IJHBT) for the year 2012-13. The article titled as “Morphologic Changes in the Bone Marrow in Patients of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) Treated with Imatinib Mesylate”. This award will be given during the inauguration ceremony of 54th Annual meeting of ISHBT at Mumbai from 7-10 November 2013.

- Dr. Debdatta Basu was awarded ‘the BD Baruah Oration’ for the year 2013 at NERCON-2013 at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong.
- Dr. Suganya, final year PG student won the prestigious ‘Nalinibai Thakkar Award’at CYTOCON 2013
- Dr. Chitra Chandran (final year PG student) and Dr. Rajalakshmi won the ‘Best Poster Award’ at CYTOCON-2013
The 55th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Haematology & Blood Transfusion (ISHBT) hosted by the Society of Haematology & Transfusion Medicine was held at Ramoji Film City Hyderabad from November 6-9th 2014. People interested in hematology from all over the country and quite a handful of eminent overseas speakers participated and shared their knowledge and experience. A team of young pathologists from the Department of Pathology, JIPMER under the guidance of Dr.Debdatta Basu, Professor and Dr.Rakhee Kar, Associate Professor attended the conference.
Dr,Debdatta Basu delivered a talk on “Morphology in Diagnostic hematology – Platelets, Parasites and Pitfalls ” in addition to being a guest faculty in the Post conference workshop on Bone Marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy interpretation where he spoke on Bone marrow in chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm.
Dr.Rakhee Kar talked on “Mechanical hemolysis” which was part of a session on Hemolytic Anaemia and also was a guest faculty in the Post conference workshop on T and T/NK cell lymphomas.
Dr.Amrutha.G, second year postgraduate won the BEST POSTER AWARD for her poster on “Evaluation of new onset pancytopenia in geriatric population with emphasis on Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) co-authored by Dr.Debdatta Basu, Dr.Rakhee Kar and Dr.Sajini Elizabeth Jacob. In addition to which there were two more poster presentation and an oral paper.
Dr. Sharmila.Y presented a poster on “Immunophenotypic profile of Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) with special reference to presence of C-MYC, CD5 and Ebstein Barr Virus”.
Dr.Ranjith.A.R presented a poster titled “Double-Trouble: Hemotologic and Non-Hematologic collision tumour. A report of two rare cases”
Dr. T. Madhumithra had an oral paper on her thesis titled “Clinico haematological profile and bone marrow histomorphology in Imatinib treated Chronic Myeloid Leukemia”
In short it was a perfect balance of academics and cultural activity and an attempt to inch forward towards the theme of the conference ‘Haematology – reaching out to one and all’
JIPMER PGs win State Level ISHBT hematology Quiz
JIPMER Postgraduates won the top two places in the Tamil Nadu-Pondicherry State Quiz in Hematology conducted under the aegis of Indian Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion at CMC, Vellore on 7.7.2014.
Dr. B.Priyavadhana, Dr.A.R.Ranjith both postgraduates of the Dept. of Pathology teamed with Dr. Balamurugan, Medicine PG to win the Quiz and qualified for the South Zone Quiz to be held later this year. The other team from JIPMER comprising of Drs. Rajeswarie T, Dr. Dharma Saranya (both Pathology) and Dr. Dhayaguruvasan (Paediatrics) came second in the state level quiz.

1. Ranjith AR, second year post graduate student won the prestigious award for the Best paper in Category A(Short communications like Case reports – exclusively for residents) at the JIPMER Scientific Society for the year 2014-2015. His paper was entitled

2. Sri Lakshmi Narayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Pondicherry organised a CME cum Pathology Meeting on 7th March 2015. There was an active participation by the Dept. of Pathology, JIPMER. Faculty members, Dr. Surendra Kumar Verma, Dr. Debdatta Basu, Dr. Sajini Elizabeth Jacob and Dr. Adarsh Barwad, along with many residents attended the same. Dr. Basu gave an invited talk on “Approach to platelet disorders”. Dr. S. Kalaivani, Senior Resident presented an interesting case of Steroid cell tumor of ovary while Dr. Khowsalya S, second year post graduate student presented a case of Isolated pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis.
Debdatta Basu, Professor of Pathology participated as Guest faculty at the 33rd Annual National CME in Pathology at JN Medical College, Belgaum on 5th June 2015 and spoke on three topics
- Lymphoma – morphology and beyond
- Bone marrow studies in Pediatric diseases
- Case discussion in Hematopathology – Potpourri of cases
5th Basic Hematopathology Course was held in Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai on 26th and 27th June 2015. Dr. Debdatta Basu along with Dr. A.R. Ranjith, final year postgraduate, Dr. Jhansi Priya and Dr. A. Pavithra, both second year post graduates attended the course. Dr. Basu was a guest faculty and spoke on Morphology of Peripheral Blood Smear.
